Being a Children’s Reading Volunteer with Doorstep Library

An Interview with Amin

Meet Amin. He is one of our stand-in volunteers. This role allows him to volunteer with us around his shifts at work and meet and read with various families across the whole of London.

How did you find out about volunteering with Doorstep Library?

I first found out about DSL through my manager at the bookshop I work at. In October 2023 he took part in a half marathon to raise funds for the Charity in London. I found his actions inspiring and that same month begun researching how I could join!

How many hours a week do you spend volunteering for us?

As I am a stand in, I typically volunteer 2 to 4 times a month, as opposed to multiple times a week.

My shift starts at 4.30 and we read with families from 5-6.30.

Where in London do you volunteer?

I have volunteered at least once in all DSL projects aside from Brixton, Tulse Hill, and Chalk Farm.

What’s been your favourite moment reading with our families?

My favourite moment, personally, is when I feel my visit has albeit briefly, afforded me a closer insight into the families / communities, we serve.

Why do you volunteer for us?

I chose to volunteer with DSL, because as a Writer, I am passionate about literature and improving the level of literacy in society. I also find the chance to pass on the love of stories an enriching endeavour.

How does volunteering with us make you feel?

Inspired, fulfilled, like I am making a difference.

What is your favourite book to read with the children on projects?

I don’t have a particular favourite book to read with children. I enjoy watching them read something they’re interested in but also like to encourage them to explore stories they may not typically be inclined toward.

Why should someone sign up to volunteer with us?

People should consider signing up as a DSL volunteer because the opportunity to bestow the love of reading is a seed which once it grows, never stops.

Our bookish volunteers gain as much from their reading sessions as they give, often citing it as the highlight of their week! Being a Doorstep Library Volunteer allows you to connect with the local community, build new relationships and learn new skills. Plus, volunteering can greatly improve your mental health and wellbeing.

By becoming a Doorstep Library Volunteer, you can:

  • Share your passion for books and reading
