Sandy Ryan
Sandy is responsible for our business operations and charity governance. She studied English & Scottish Literature at university and her love of books & literature saw her train as a book and archive conservator. She worked for many years at the British Library in conservation, gaining an MSc in Conservation Science, and latterly in collections management. After leaving the BL she spent five years running a housing charity in South London.
A huge rugby fan and keen gardener, her favourite children’s book is Carbonel: ‘The King of the Cats’ by Barbara Sleigh, which was read to her as a child by her older sister.
Monica Patel
Monica is Head of Delivery and Engagement and is responsible for our service delivery and volunteer engagement teams. Monica has over 22 years of management experience in charities and the early years sector. She has worked for Sure Start Children, Family Centres, and a range of charities including Mencap, Refuge UK, and Voluntary Action Westminster.
Monica has been passionate about reading since childhood and loves unwinding with a good book and a cup of tea.
Monica’s favourite children’s book is: ‘Paddington’ by Michael Bond.
Lucy Campbell
Lucy is the Service Delivery Manager and is responsible for the delivery of our reading projects across London and online. Her previous role was working with and supporting children and young people with disabilities through delivering volunteer-led buddying programmes. As a big reader herself, she would like to bring her love of reading to the role whilst ensuring that programmes are as accessible and inclusive as possible and supporting children to find their love of reading.
Lucy’s favourite children’s book is: ‘The Jolly Postman’ by Janet & Allan Ahlberg
Carol Horne
Carol has 20 years’ experience in the charity sector, most recently at Age UK Richmond where she managed wellbeing and prevention programmes in the community. Prior to that she has worked at a UK disability charity and volunteered for an NGO working to bring about food sovereignty in sub-Saharan Africa.
Carol was drawn to Doorstep Library’s work because she’s convinced that childhood literacy is the silver bullet that can transform young lives. An obsessive reader, Carol is on a first-name basis with staff at her local public library! When she’s not reading, Carol enjoys open water swimming in icy lakes.
Her favourite children’s book is ‘Dogger’ by Shirley Hughes.
Emma Dale
Emma manages the finances at Doorstep Library. Following a degree in languages and business, she trained as an accountant and has over 20 years of experience working at Oxfam, Oxford University and some small charities.
She loves having the time to get lost in a good book – her favourite children’s book is: ‘The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe’ by CS Lewis.
Caroline Newte Hardie
Caroline spent over a decade working with secondary schools across Hackney and Tower Hamlets as an education consultant. During this time, she saw first-hand how vital access to learning is for young people, and how barriers such as literacy difficulties can persist throughout a child’s education if left unaddressed. She worked across multiple vocational pathways and is deeply passionate about the positive impact that corporates, SMEs, and individuals can have on a child’s educational journey.
Her commitment to literacy is also personal. Caroline’s eldest son was learning to read in Reception when Covid hit, and he struggled significantly. His confidence, and curiosity, began to fade. Without timely intervention, Caroline believes he may have disengaged from learning altogether at just five years old. For her, reading, and a love of reading, is a gateway to the future, imagination, and fun.
As a child, Caroline’s favourite book was The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis; the strange worlds, unforgettable characters, and sense of adventure captured her imagination (and every lion since has been a disappointment…!). She later loved Philip Pullman’s Northern Lights trilogy. Today, reading with her own children, she’s happily addicted to Cressida Cowell’s How to Train Your Dragon series, proof that some stories are just as magical for grown-ups. And, for the record, Camicazi is one of the best characters ever written.
Lucy Smith
Before joining Doorstep Library in June 2025, Lucy held previous roles at Leonard Cheshire Disability and arts in healthcare charity, Paintings in Hospitals. Prior to fundraising, Lucy worked in the film industry for several years.
Lucy believes being read to as a child and discovering books has a lifelong influence. From hungry caterpillars to parallel universes, stories that capture the imagination can open doors into art and culture in all its forms, inspiring learning, resilience and self-expression.
As a small child, Lucy liked stories that mainly involved medieval princesses dressed in 1960’s ballgowns, but she loved Piggly Plays Truant, a now classic Ladybird Book (verse and illustrations by A.J Macgregor) in which Piggly plays truant from school with his best friend and they have to be rescued when their rowing boat starts to drifts perilously far away from shore……

She is also the Project Leader in Marylebone and Fulham Broadway.
Her passion for reading blossomed as a child and followed her into her studies in English Literature and Spanish at university. However, it was her previous role as a bookseller that reignited an interest in children’s literature and made her really appreciate the impact it plays in our lives. She hopes to be able to spread the joy that books have brought her over the years to many others!
Freya’s favourite children’s book is: ‘I Love You, Blue Kangaroo!’ and she was obsessed with all things Jacqueline Wilson as a child.
Claire Hoadley
Claire is the Online Project Leader at Doorstep Library and supports the delivery of online reading sessions. Claire has a degree in Psychology and a postgraduate qualification in Clinical Psychology and Mental Health. She worked as a primary school teacher in London for several years, where she made it a priority to create a classroom environment that celebrated reading. From daily story time to building a cosy reading corner and choosing books she knew would spark her students’ imaginations, she aimed to help children develop confidence, curiosity and a genuine love of books. A lifelong book lover herself, she has been passionate about reading since childhood and always has a growing ‘to be read’ list on the go. Claire hopes to continue promoting reading for pleasure through her work at Doorstep Library.
Claire’s favourite children’s book is Matilda by Roald Dahl.
Ben Selfe
Ben studied the world’s best-selling book at university, with a BA in Biblical Studies and MLitt in Divinity. He particularly enjoyed studying the Bible as a piece of literature. Through his working and volunteering roles he has worked in communities in disadvantaged areas, with families affected by homelessness, substance misuse and food insecurity.
The focus of a lot of his roles has been building strong partnership networks with other charitable and statutory organisations, to provide more cohesive and effective support to our communities. He has spent the past three years at home looking after his two children, and reading together is an important and enjoyable part of family life. He’s excited to help Doorstep Library bring that joy of shared reading to other families across London.
Ben’s favourite children’s book is “The Book With No Pictures” by BJ Novak
