Champions For Children Big Give 2024

30th May 2024

Make a difference big give

One donation, double the impact.

From 4th June – 18th June any donation you make to Doorstep Library will be doubled, through our #ChampionsForChildren match-funding Campaign – ran in partnership with The Childhood Trust and The Big Give.

Did you know that reading for pleasure is the single most important factor in determining a child’s future success? At Doorstep Library, we believe in the power of words and the magic of reading. From as little as £1, you could have a long-lasting impact on a child from an under-resourced area in the UK.

If you’re not in a position to donate, you can also help by sharing our campaign with your friends and family. Feel free to use our campaign graphics across your own social media platforms.

Why We Need Your Help

The enjoyment of reading and access to books can transform a child’s life. Books not only create magical moments of escapism – they also provide the academic and emotional skills needed to secure a child’s future success.

Sadly, 1 in 5 young children do not own a single book (National Literacy Trust). Since 2010, we have been fighting this inequality in education by bringing the gift of books and the joy of reading directly into the homes of vulnerable children. 93% of the caregivers we visit say our service has helped their children to read better. 98% have said it has improved the overall well-being of their child.

With an estimated 19,000 adults in the UK struggling to pay for everyday living (The Childhood Trust) and 1 in 6 children estimated to struggle with a mental health problem (Young Minds, 2021), the socioeconomic gap between children experiencing poverty and their more affluent peers is only getting wider.

The Solution We Offer

Here’s where we come in – Doorstep Library runs free, at-home reading visits for 0–11-year-olds living in disadvantaged areas.

Our highly trained, compassionate volunteers are paired with a family. They visit same children every week in term time. This way, we get to know the children, building an understanding of their unique skills and interests. We take pride in picking books that will genuinely ignitespark excitment inexcite the children we see, and aim to reflect their diverse experiences back to them.

How Your Funds Help

Providing a reading service like ours might sound simple, but it requires a lot of love, care, and attention to deliver the best possible service to the children we see. Money we raise could help us deliver the training, safeguarding, and recruitment of Doorstep Library volunteers that we need to bring books to the 600 children we see every year.

We also need money to buy books! By purchasing the latest children’s titles where we can, we ensure that the children we see don’t feel left behind by their more affluent peers. This way, we keep them invested and interested in reading for the long run.

You can help to have a long-lasting impact on the life of a child experiencing disadvantage today by donating to our #ChampionsForChildren Big Give Campaign. Any donation made to us between 4th June – 18th June will be doubled!

If you can’t donate, you can also help by sharing this message with 5 friends

No matter how – thank you so much on behalf of all the children we serve for investing in their future.
